You are my Sunshine!

I can just hear my Dad singing that old song!  And that’s exactly what I thought of and heard in my head the entire time I was making this cheerful and sunny yellow card.  I wanted to make this card tonight because I just got some new colors of silk ribbon and I loved this soft and buttery golden yellow color.  I immediately thought of this sunflower image on my Cotton Scraps, and away I went:

Isn’t it just so sunny and cheerful?  I love it!  The image is intentionally off to the left a bit to provide more room for the generous bow done in the 100% Silk Ribbon.  A very simply done card, so similar to many I do.

Can you see the Flower Soft I used on the center of the Sunflower?  I used Nut Brown and it adds so much texture IRL – wish you could see it!  Also a closer look at my ribbon/bow.  It’s a double looped bow made on the Bow Easy.

I’m so glad you stopped in today — I truly appreciate it when you do!  I’ll be busy the next couple days getting a few posts ready for this week and adding some fun new things to the Stamp Simply Ribbon Store.  I’ve added a Page 3 (above my blog header) where I’ll include a few of my most favorite stamping supplies and some other fun things!  I  also have plans to put kits there and other fun seasonal items.  So though I  am just working on it now, plan to check there from time to time to see what is new and what is changing.  Items on Page 3 will change much more frequently than on the other pages.  Anyway, thanks so much for stopping in!  Truly appreciate it!

Hi Sharon – I love the card, and I love the song. Can I tell you a story. When my son was a baby (21 years ago) I used to sing it to him every day – especially when I was feeding him. It was ‘our’ song, and when he was a toddler, we would sing it to each other. In March 2006, 2 weeks after his 18th birthday, he fell asleep while driving and hit a large tree. He suffered multiple injuries – back broken in 5 places; neck broken in 3 places; leg so badly broken the emergency doctor at the hospital wanted to amputate it; face split open from the top of his nose to below his chin and severe brain damage. He was not expected to live but he did, and he was in a coma for nearly a month. While trying to ‘help him regain consciousness’ I used to sing ‘You are my Sonshine’ (spelling intended!) over and over again as part of my repetoire of endeavours. Eventually he regained consciousness. Many months later when he was able to talk again, and I told him how I sang the song to him he joked that it was my awful singing that caused him to wake up so that he could ask me to stop – perhaps he wasn’t joking! After 13 months, and the prayers of many people, and many miracles, he was discharged from hospital. He still needed (and needs) a lot of rehab, but he is making good progress, and we are so grateful to God for our son’s life. At Christmas last year, I opened his present to me and found a dancing doll which sings ‘You are my Sonshine’, along with a note he had written, hoping that I would enjoy singing along to the song which had helped awaken him from his coma, and thanking me for what I had done to help him. It’s a funny wee thing, but the memories it represents are so precious. Thank you for sharng your card Sharon – it is a lovely reminder for me of a song with the happiest of memories. God bless you.
    Anne.

Absolutely gorgeous Sharon, I love the silk, a beautiful color! I sing this song to Baxter all the time, he loves to nestle in my lap and hear me sing (he’s the only one . . . LOL)! Okay, couldn’t help but see Darlene’s comment and then went up and read Anne’s note, yikes, my make up is all ruined . . . what a testimony of God’s love!

I love that song, too! My favorite rendition of it is sung by the Carter Family. But then, I haven’t heard your dad sing it! 🙂

  16. MMMM that silk ribbon looks stunning with the sunflowers! You do such beautiful work with these cotton scraps Sharon, the little touches of flower soft really work lovely with it!

  17. My grandmother used to sing that song to me when I was little. Now I sing it to my daughter – in fact, I call my DD Sunshine – because that’s what she is.
Your card is beautiful and brings back warm memories.
Heading your way in a few weeks I hope. We’re going to try to mine at the Caledonia Mine – waiting to hear if my hubby can get the time off from work.

Your post today brought back memories of when my Mom would always sing this song to my daughter when she was a little girl. My daughter is 33 y.o. today and this song will always be “their” song. Now I sometimes sing it to my 2 little grandsons just for old times sake! Your pretty card with all the buttery colored yellows capture the essence of this song to a “T”. TFS! Sheila

  24. Lorna says:

That sure brings back memories. I used to sing that song to my kids when they were babies and older and taught them that song, and when my grandsons were small I sang to them. The card is so beautiful. The paper that the stamps are on looks so much like material. Super card.
