Sunday School Craft Project – Cookies in a Jar

Published by at 7 00 pm under Uncategorized

Quick Note: $3.95 shipping on ALL US orders extended through Christmas Day!!! Details here.

In discussing a possible Christmas craft project with my Sunday School class of mid-elementary age children, they were unanimous in wanting to make a gift for their Moms. They asked to do candles again, but since we had done these candles as a Mother’s Day project already, I suggested we do Cookies in a Jar instead.  They were thrilled with that idea, so here’s the project I came up with that we’ll be doing tomorrow morning.  I think they’ll have fun creating their jars filled with ingredients and putting on the pretty finishing touches.  Take a look:

Cookie Jar 400590

This is the sample I made up for the kids to see.

I used standard quart mason jars and this recipe. I have used this recipe before on this project, and just as before, all the ingredients listed do NOT fit into a quart jar if you want to add raisins. To make room for the raisins, I decreased the oatmeal. Hope I didn’t mess up the texture of the cookies too much, but I guess my main concern was to get raisins in the jar for appearance sake — LOL — you can tell where my priorities lie when it comes to baking vs. crafting!

Once the jar was filled, I cut circles with my Circle Nesties to cover the jar top/lid.

Paper:  DIY Christmas by Simple Stories

Dies:  Circle Nesties

Cookie Tag CU 340530

The black tag is one of 12 included in the tag pack from the North Pole Collection by Kaiserscraft – perfect for this project!

The instructions on how to make the cookies was printed onto printer paper, cut and adhered to a piece of cardstock. They were hung with the twine that comes with the tags.

To make this all go together easily, run Scor Tape around the outer rim of the jar ring.  Then you can place your ribbon around the rim and it stays put while you tie your bow.  Doing it this way also allows you to remove the lid with the embellishments all in tact. You can then re-fill the bottle for another gift, ready to go, or just fill it with something pretty, put the lid on, and there you have a bit of holiday decor for your kitchen.

Cardstock: Core’dinations ColorCore Signature – Graphic 45 Lights (green) and Darks (red, black)

Ribbon: May Arts 5/8″ Burlap Center Stitch – Red, Green (took about 30″ to wrap around and tie the bow with tails)

Adhesive: Tape Runner, Scor Tape, Glue Dots, 3D Foam Squares

Cookie Elements 500402

These are the pieces I prepped for the kids – the circles for the jar tops, the recipes and the gift tags.

There really wasn’t much prep for this project. It came together pretty quickly.

Amy Bagged 400491

Once completed, the Cookies in a Jar and  dish towel will be gifted in a brown paper handled bag, with a bit of decoration.

The wooden spoon is held on with glue dots at the handle points.

The ribbon is tied on to the spoon.

And that card (purchased), so perfect for this project, is adhered with thin 3D Foam Squares.

The kids can write a little message and sign the inside.

Amy Cards 600318

LOVE these cards — note the year, 2014, on them.

I purchased these in a set of 12 (3 of each shown) from Amy Tedder at her NEW Etsy Shop, At Your Design. I purchased these cards ready made, and they came with nice envelopes.  However, you can also purchase just the digital images and do your own thing. Canvases are really hot now and Amy has some FABULOUS designs for wall hangings, etc. I did also purchase a digital piece of customized work from Amy, but it’s for a Christmas gift, so I can’t show it to you for a few days, but I will as soon as I can!  I love it!!! And I have plans for so many more personalized gifts from  Amy as well.  Check out At Your Design — I think it’ll get your wheels turning, too!

And, I might add, if you didn’t make the connection this is THE Amy behind all the wonderful JustRite stamp and die designs.  JustRite does have a few other designers (Becca Feeken and Samantha Walker), but the bulk of their work is created by Amy.  She’s so very talented and I was so pleased to see her open her very own Etsy Shop.  Best wishes, Amy !!!
